Welcome to Day 4!

I want to congratulate you for getting this far! In Day 4 of our email course, we’ll do an in-depth analysis of a website – what approach or style you’re going to focus and how you can maximize its earning potential.

There are so many approaches or styles as to how you want to position your website – your online business platform. You can focus on very specific niche products, build a personal and lifestyle blog, or make authority sites. Read along and I will discuss all of these in detail.

Regardless of what you choose, if you offer good quality content, it will attract readers and drive traction continuously. You’ll be sitting on a digital gold mine in no time.

Let’s get started.

3 Website Approach for Affiliate Marketing

Option 1: Niche Product

This type of affiliate marketing is heavily focused on a product. It could be a wide range of products or very specific.

An example of an affiliate website is The Wirecutter. It is popular in writing reviews on electronics, gadgets and consumer goods. It was started by Brian Lam, the former editorial director of Gizmodo. Brian and team put all reviewed products through strenuous and innovative tests, so much so that the site is sometimes called “Mythbusters for gadgets”.

Their affiliate commissions are primarily from Amazon and Best Buy.

Option 2: Build an Authority Site

An authority site is more for a long term plan. It has a wider scope compared to a niche site. It is expected that the authority site has a very high-quality website that is respected by knowledgeable people in its industry. It is a website that has content on it that is so good and makes the site so useful that people are actually glad they landed on it and want to share it with their friends.

Authority sites publish trustworthy information and link to other trustworthy places on the web.

A perfect example of an authority site is Lucie’s List. Its targeted audience are first-time moms and its main goal is to prevent pregnant women feel miserable for having a baby.

Affiliate commissions come from mainly Amazon for the baby product they highly recommend.

Option 3: Lifestyle Blog

Most of the successful blogs I follow are lifestyle blogs. I love the success stories of lifestyle blogs. Think about it – you just wake up one day and you had aha moment to blog about your life. You stick with your passion and write like no one is reading and then suddenly you become really famous.

This is exactly what happened with Julia Powell who became popular for creating Julie/Julia Project – a blog chronicling her attempt to cook all the recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. If you haven’t heard about it, maybe you’ve seen the movie Julie & Julia starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. That’s the story!

A lifestyle blog is pretty hard to pull off but easier to get started with. You can write your random ramblings about life and become really focused on one facet of your life experience.

One of the examples of Lifestyle blog I follow is Making Sense of Cents by Michelle Gardner. Michelle started this blog with a goal to document her journey on how she can pay her mountain of student debt. Her blog has evolved from personal finance to affiliate marketing site, giving recommendations on how to have a successful website like hers.

I like lifestyle blogs and I’m planning to launch a lifestyle blog myself – which focuses on personal finance. This is something I’m passionate about, that I don’t really think about its monetization potential. I bet this is how Michelle started her blog too.

Monetization Strategies

There are tons of ways to make money online. However, I won’t discuss all of them here but only those relevant to the affiliate marketing website.

Any website that drives traffic can make money. As you build your website, matures and grows traffic, more opportunities to monetize and earn online. For example, apart from earning through affiliate sales, you can also create your own digital product or an ebook that you can self-publish in Amazon KDP. You can also start doing “sponsored posts” which you can charge a hefty amount. The possibilities are endless.

So how can you monetize your website? Let me give you a rundown:

Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are the best way to make money with your website. You can make decent money with very little traffic as long as your content is good and your traffic is relevant.

Although putting an affiliate link within your content is easy, I highly discourage you to do that. Do you still remember about creating value? Your readers need your genuine opinion about the product, and they assumed that you’ve used and tested the product you’re recommending.

Display Ads

Displaying Ads to your website is the easiest way of making money online. All you need to do is placing banner ads to your website, either on a sidebar, within the post, header or footer. You don’t have to do any promotions. You simply write your content, get more traffic and hopefully, the visitors of your site click the display ads.

More traffic = more possibilities to get clicks = more money

Google AdSense is the most popular that you can sign up with, but there are many other alternatives.

The top-performing display ads banner size and format, which means the ads that get a higher click-through rate (CTR) is a medium rectangle (300 x 250) placed on the sidebar.

You will not make millions from displaying ads, but still, these are money you can earn. If you have gained so much traction, the income you will earn adds to your total earning. Buzzfeed is a very good example of a website that earning so much from displaying ads.

Sell Your Website or Flipping Domain

Selling website or flipping domain is getting popular these days. Though I’m not really fond of it, still, this can be a lucrative business for some people.

This is how it works – choose a niche, make a website, monetize it and then sell or ‘flip’ the website. There are quite a few people who like this kind of platform for quick cash. It’s like flipping real estate.

If you know what you’re doing, you can sell your website 20x or even 40x of its monthly income. So, if your site is earning $100 per month, you can sell it from $2,000 to $4,000.

In 2014, I sold my movie blog for $10,000! After the broker commission, it was a $7,000 net profit. I don’t want to let go of that site, but my priorities have changed when my daughter was born.

Here’s more about selling your website.
